Summer Shoes: How to Choose Sneakers, Sandals and Espadrilles

The best summer shoes for a short trip to the café may be a poor choice for a day of walking. Choose for the distance and surface first, then think about how the shoes look with your clothes.

Sneakers for an active day

A familiar pair of sneakers is a practical starting point when you expect to walk a lot. Check how the upper feels in warm weather and whether the shoes still fit comfortably with your usual socks. Lightweight does not automatically mean comfortable, and a thin upper does not tell you how the whole shoe fits.

Sandals for warm-weather outfits

Look at where the straps touch your foot, not just the sole length. Try walking and changing direction indoors: do the straps rub, and does the foot stay in place? Adjustable straps can be useful, but their placement still needs to suit your foot.

Slides for short, casual use

Slides are convenient to put on and take off. That convenience does not guarantee a secure fit for every activity. Think about how far you will walk and whether your foot moves around in them before making them your only holiday shoes.

Espadrilles for a different texture

Espadrilles can work with light trousers or a casual summer outfit. Read the care instructions, especially for styles with rope-like trim or materials that need to stay dry. Check the actual construction rather than assuming every pair is suitable for the same conditions.

Pack around your plans

For a short trip, one pair for the longest walking day and another for a different setting may be more useful than several similar pairs. Try both with the outfits you plan to take. Shoes that need a completely separate wardrobe add more luggage than value.

Check fit before leaving home

Measure both feet if you are ordering online, then use the brand’s chart. Check returns before wearing the shoes outside. Do not leave the first try-on until the day you travel.
